Provincial RIS and PACS Project

Implementation of the RIS (Radiology Information System) and PACS (Picture Archive and Communication System) functionalities at 46 DSM imaging facilities concluded in late 2010, enabling these sites to electronically share diagnostic images and reports across the province.

These systems ultimately benefit patients through better image management, better image quality and more timely consultations which allow patients to receive their results more quickly. Radiologists can view images as scans are being performed by Medical Radiological Technologists. This is a significant benefit for emergency patients and also for routine (non-emergency appointments) testing where Radiologists can provide immediate feedback to technologists to ensure that the needed images are captured in a single appointment, thereby eliminating the possibility of the patient having to return for additional scans.
